How to put in a button up fly!!!! :)
Hi to all, today I'm going to post a tutorial on how to sew in a fly in Men's pyjama pants, boxers etc. etc. I will post full boxer tutorial later as I did use a pattern but I didn't follow the instruction because I couldn't make much sense of them and I hope to be posting a lot more tutorials etc. :) So I decided to make my boyfriend cat print boxers because he adores cats and customized boxers make great gifts for brothers, husbands, boyfriend and just about anyone. I will also be posting a Women's tutorial. Anyway lets get down to the nitty gritty.Step 1. Take both front pieces and over lock each inner leg seam (crotch seam) individually.
Step 2. You should have three pieces of fabric for the fly, and two of interfacing. For example I'm contrasting my cat print fabric with the colour blue so altogether I have cut two of the blue fabric, cut one of cat fabric and also cut two of the iron on interfacing.
Step 4. Next take you 3rd fly piece (for me, my cat printed piece) and iron on your interfacing to the wrong side and over lock round all the edges.
Step 5. Pin right sides together of your under lapping fly piece (blue contrast/double layer) to the over locked inner seam and straight stitch down (I used a 1cm seam allowance). Now pin the other flap to the other side, right sides together (inner over locked seam again) and straight stitch down.
Step 6. Now lay your two front pieces right sides together and stitch the last of the crotch stopping at where you flap/fly stitching starts, remember to back-stitch!!
Step 7. When you lay the front of the boxers out, there should be a split in the front and both of the flaps/fly pieces wrong sides should be facing you. Now take the cat printed flap (single layer one) and fold it over to the inside of the boxers and then stitch around the curve of the flap and straight across a few cm up creating a upside down 'f' shape.
Step 8. Now fold the blue flap/fly piece out (double layer) and slip it under the cat print flap/fly piece (single layer), then sew a few cm up the bottom of the using a shortened zig-zag stitch, or a satin stitch would work too, this gives it strength and a tidier finish. :)
Step 9. Next thing is to add your buttonholes, mark them out first and make sure they are lined up. I mark out my first one then sewed it and then measure from the first one to get my second one lined up but whatever is easiest for you :)
Step 10. Once you've attached the back and sewn the crotch seam ,attaching the waistband will hold you're flaps/fly pieces in place.
I will be posting on how to make the rest of the boxers soon as there is a patch pocket involved :) anyway that how to put a fly into men's boxers, Hoped this helped, if you have any tips, questions etc. just post in the comments and I will try answer them the best I can :) thanks all ;) <3 xx Meggy
